All their subsequent encounters so far – after the world title clash – have ended in draws. But, fighting draws at that. Gibraltar Chess 2012 – Hou Yifan Pawn Sac for Power Piece Play Against Liem

Machines are more materialistic than humans when it comes to chess. Humans don’t mind material loss for active play and beautiful ideas. Women’s World Chess Champion Hou Yifan of China went for such an idea unleashing the power of her pieces against Vietnam’s Le Quang Liem. The game was played at the Gibraltar Tradewise 2012. In one of the strongest performances by a woman chess player, Hou Yifan not only beat the world’s strongest-ever woman chess player Judit Polgar of Hungary, but also tied for first with none other than GM Nigel Short in Gibraltar. Kazan Chess R4 - Hou Yifan vs Viktorija Cmilyte 0-1

The Best Chess Game Award at the just-concluded Kazan¬†Chess Grand Prix 2012 has gone to Viktorija Cmilyte. It was a special prize given on the occasion of the 100th birth anniversary of Rashit Nezmetdinov. The organising committee chose Cmilyte’s game against Women’s World Chess Champion Hou Yifan as the best game of the event.
