Tal Chess Memorial: Grischuk Teaches How to Draw in the Face of Ballistic Carlsen Attack

They would say only a Russian could do this. We would say anyone could do it with Chess King. Actually! Here is a fantastic game from the ongoing 7th edition of the Tal Chess Memorial. Round 4 saw Magnus Carlsen – World No. 1 from Norway – play an all out attack with White against Russia’s Alexander Grischuk. Hold your breath and watch the game. Dare you play it in a tournament?

Congrats to Grischuk for holding that. Carlsen sure has some nerve to lock in that Bishop at g3 and get away with it. Thanks for sharing. Memorable game really.

  • Alexis Cochran, NZ says:

14.gxf3 I think I wouldn’t play that in a million years against a GM. Guess Carlsen was sick of draws in the previous rounds and went for win or lose but draw again. Nice game.

    Holy Cow. Uff.

    What’s wrong with 29…hxg3 ?

    • Max Bouaraba says:

hard to say, but maybe it has something to do with Qh3+-Kg8, Ng4-Nf4, Qh6-g2+, Rxg2-N4h5, f4?! and ongoing attack or instead of f4 even Qg6 with the “thread” of Nh6? Not really clear to me what a Computer would say. But for sure a russian player dont like to get killed like this, so Grischuk dont give such pleasures to Carlen…

@Acimul guess because of fear of infilteration on h3 with Queen and the Rook coming up as well. I have this line though.
