Idea Chess Puzzle: Turov-Felgaer 1-0

This position is taken from the game Turov-Felgaer, Linares, 2001. Black has just played 27….Rhe8. Yes, Black is going to win the e pawn, but does White have a winning idea? Don’t look for specific chess moves just yet. Think about White’s best resources and what could win the game for White. Replay the game in the Chess King applet.

It is clear that White has chances on the long light-squared diagonal with a dream to Queen a pawn on the Queenside. But, if White tries something like 28.Rxb7 Rxb7 29.Bxb7, then Black would jam the Queenside pawns with a5 at an opportune moment. After a5 from Black, White would have a tough time winning – if at all – because the pawn roll would be stuck. So, White has to translate his dream of a Queenside pawn run with some practical choices. The e-pawn is going to fall soon enough. That’s exactly how GM Turov played! Replay the game below to understand White’s winning ideas in this game. This game is just one of the millions in the Chess King software that’s powered by Houdini and sure to up your chess level.
