Chess World Cup Finalist Dmitry Andreikin’s Crucial Tiebreak win over Evgeny Tomashevsky
Reigning Russian chess champion Dmitry Andreikin will take on former World Chess Champion Vladimir Kramnik in the World Cup finals that begin today in Tromso, Norway. Andreikin, in August 2012, became the 65th Russian Chess Championship in Moscow after winning a rapid playoff against five other players. In the Tal Memorial played in June 2013, Andreikin was the lowest rated player, but he went through the tournament undefeated with eight draws and a win against Kramnik, which gave him a shared third to fifth place.

World Chess Cup Round 5: Vladimir Kramnik – Anton Korobov 1-0
The World Chess Cup being played in Tromso, Norway is now in the fifth round. The knockout tournament has only eight players left from a pool of 128. Round 4 at the World Cup 2013 witnessed a shock defeat for the former US Chess Champion Hikaru Nakamura at the hands of Ukraine’s Anton Korobov. Nakamura suffered the pain of a bad light-squared Bishop buried in by himself. It was as if White played much of the game a piece up. Every exchange brought Korobov closer to victory. The big upset-maker from Peru Julio Granda Zuniga fell for an oversight completely misreading a pin. Black blundered with 20…f5?? not realising that the following en passant was safe enough. Black was forced to resign right away.

The World Chess Cup 2013 being played in Tromso, Norway is down to Round 4 and 16 players. The most exciting game so far seems to be Gata Kamsky versus Shakhriyar Mamedyarov. Can you count how many sacrifices Kamsky had up his sleeve in this game? Black’s extra piece could not be compensated by White’s three pawns. Mamedyarov stumbled with 23…Kg7 allowing Kamsky to go for the kill.
